Roger Ballen

Roger Ballen is widely considered one of the most influential photographers of the past 50 years. He is known for works which challenge the viewer’s pre-conceived notions of world and self, giving them visual tools with which to explore the recesses of their own psyche, as they enter his. Born in New York, Ballen has lived and worked in South Africa for the past 30 years. There his work as a geologist was what led him to discover photography, as he ventured into the region’s small towns to discover the hidden domesticity within them. Over the years his style has evolved into what he describes as ‘documentary fiction’, finding new ways in which to explore and subvert the traditions of documentary photography – often in square format black & white, sometimes including elements of drawing, collage and sculpture in his compositions.
